typed double-spaced (including references) with conventional margins. The overall length is limited to five manuscript pages, including not more than one figure or one table. To the Editor: Ionized calcium is now the measurement of choice for evaluating calcium metabolic diseases (1, 2). Ionized calcium may be reported either as the actual ionized calcium, referred to the actual pH of the patients (arterial or capillary blood), or as a4justed ionized calcium, to a standard pH at pH 7.40. The latter has been shown to be as useful as actual ionized calcium in evaluating patients with chronic disorders of calcium metabolism (3). Although, theoretically, actual ionized calcium should be superior to measurement of adjusted ionized calcium in patients undergoing hemodialysis, because of the severe metabolic changes involved (3), studies showing this are lacking. In a prospective study, we measured actual ionized calcium, adjusted ionized calcium, and parathyroid hormone

Effects of storage temperature and time before centrifugation on ionized calcium in blood collected in plain vacutainer tubes and silicone-separator (SST) tubes.

We studied the stability of ionized calcium and pH in samples stored at either room temperature or 4 degrees C, in centrifuged and uncentrifuged blood-collection tubes and in centrifuged tubes containing a silicone-separator gel (SST tubes). At room temperature, in uncentrifuged blood from healthy individuals, mean ionized calcium usually increased no more than 10 mumol/L per hour; at 4 degrees...

بررسی سطح سرمی کلسیم در مبتلایان به لیکن پلان اروزیو دهانی

Introduction & Objective: Lichen planus is a mucocutaneous disorder with unknown etiology, which may have lots of ethological factors like immunological ones. The disease appears in several clinical forms of which the erosive type is the most important despite its low preva-lence. This is because of the signs like pain, irritation and risk of malignancy. In spite of us-ing different drugs, ther...

Determination of ionized calcium in serum that has been exposed to air.

We examined changes in ionized calcium concentration in serum after its exposure to air. Samples with total protein concentrations ranging from 50 to 90 g/liter were equilibrated with CO2 in nitrogen (5/95, by vol) or CO2 alone, to produce pH values of 7.0 to 8.0. Ionized calcium was then measured with an Orion flow-through electrode system. Curves relating pH and ionized calcium concentration ...

Relationship between serum lactate and ionized calcium in open-heart surgery.

We studied 16 patients undergoing open-heart surgery and heart-lung bypass, to examine the relationship between ionized calcium and lactate. Blood was sampled at successive stages of the operation for measurement of ionized and total calcium, lactate, blood gases, pH, hematocrit, and other constituents. We found that correlations between ionized calcium and lactate were positive and statistical...
